Summer Wreath

New customer Chrystal Patton had a great idea! She has a door and a storm door and, like me, has trouble hanging a real wreath. It doesn't hang right on the storm door and gets squished in between the two. Her solution? A wreath on a canvas. She also had the thought to order one for each season. Now why didn't I think of that?
For now, she requested "something cute in bright summer colors". I did a polka dot wreath in aqua, hot pink, orange, and lime on an eye-catching yellow. My favorite part (other than the dots!) is the four strands of matching ribbon. So cute!

This is a little larger than the usual 10x10 square. It is a 16x16 and costs $35.00.
I liked this one so much that I did a second one exactly like it. It is currently available for immediate delivery. I will happily add "welcome" or a name or monogram in the center at no additional cost. Shipping is always free.

A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H...

...and for the first time, I!
Thank you, Katherine Inskeep, for the experience of doing an I monogram. She wanted a classic, simple initial on a cream background with chocolate brown lettering, trim, and ribbon. It looks so good on my chocolate brown front door!

Bargain Shopping

I went to the Manchester Goodwill Store yesterday, at the urging of my frugal friend Christie Allison, and found some good deals. Everyone loves a good deal!

I am a shoe person and was pleasantly surprised to find some rather nice shoes at amazing prices. I got these gorgeous, butter soft, metallic Cole Haan (yes, Cole Haan!) pumps for $9.99. The gold Chinese Laundry gladiator sandals with the pretty rhinestones were just $6.99. They remind me of one of my favorite quotes, "I was on my way to do something great and then I got distracted by something shiny".

I want to share a good deal with you all. Order any 5x5 canvas during the month of July for only $10.00. That's $5.00 off! Take this golden opportunity to get a jump start on Christmas gifts, fall decorations, and kid's rooms. Spell something out for that price!
I can't wait to see what you all come up with!

A Little Sweetness

A little chocolate goes a long way! I love this sweet, simple chocolate and pink canvas. New customer, Katherine Inskeep, ordered it for her daughter. The sheer pink and chocolate ribbon adds the perfect finishing touch.
At only $15.00, they make a wonderful gift.

Pink+Zebra=Adorable

Cute, cute, cute! This little hot pink and zebra 5x5 canvas is going to new customer Ashley Thames. She wanted something to help celebrate her daughter's birthday. I don't know if it's the ribbon, the font, or the colors...but this one really works!

I did this one as a birthday gift for Lauren's friend, Bella Cantrell. As I was painting it, Lauren came in and asked about it. I told her what it was and she looked at me and said, "Oh, mom. Can't we get her a real gift?"
Oh, well. I try.

Wedding Gift

Marcy Bolding ordered this canvas to give as a wedding gift. She wanted something similar to the tin sign I painted for m mother a while back. It is sweet, simple, and perfect for a new home. I love it! Thank you for the order, Marcy!

Ambition

This very large (20x30) canvas is going to Lisa Patton. Lisa is a nursing instructor and one of her students came up with this quote. As Lisa tells me, this student persevered through some rough times to make it to graduation. She wanted it in her office to remind her not to give up.

I've had some comments and emails asking me about my lettering. First off, let me say that I get my fonts from dafont.com. They are free and there is a lot of variety. I do not trace or project them in any way. I sketch them out lightly by hand. You can see my imperfect sketching in the top photo. I do use a ruler to get multiple lines of text straight and to measure to center things.

Then I start painting. With a good sketch, it is almost like coloring in the lines of a coloring book! Most lettering gets two coats. It looks kind of chintzy with just one. Here you can see the "at" with one coast and the "th" with two. On the second coat I also like to add a little white highlight. It just adds a little extra something.

The finished product! This is my absolute favorite font. It's called "Ballpark Wiener"! It is a nice thick cursive that shows up well and is not too frilly. Lisa said her walls are institutional gray and they needed something to brighten them up. I understand...my classroom is institutional beige. I thought this cheery yellow would do the trick and I love the yellow/gray color combination.

This is Why I'll Never be an Adult

I have repeatedly discovered that it is important for me not to surpass my capacity for responsibility.  Over the years, this capacity has grown, but the results of exceeding it have not changed.

Normally, my capacity is exceeded gradually, through the accumulation of simple, daily tasks.

But a few times a year, I spontaneously decide that I'm ready to be a real adult.  I don't know why I decide this; it always ends terribly for me.  But I do it anyway.  I sit myself down and tell myself how I'm going to start cleaning the house every day and paying my bills on time and replying to emails before my inbox reaches quadruple digits.  Schedules are drafted.  Day-planners are purchased.  I stock up on fancy food because I'm also planning on morphing into a master chef and actually cooking instead of just eating nachos for dinner every night.   I prepare for  my new life as an adult like some people prepare for the apocalypse.

The first day or two of my plans usually goes okay.

For a little while, I actually feel grown-up and responsible.  I strut around with my head held high, looking the other responsible people in the eye with that knowing glance that says "I understand.  I'm responsible now too.  Just look at my groceries."

At some point, I start feeling self-congratulatory.

This is a mistake.

I begin to feel like I've accomplished my goals.  It's like I think that adulthood is something that can be earned like a trophy in one monumental burst of effort and then admired and coveted for the rest of one's life.

What usually ends up happening is that I completely wear myself out. Thinking that I've earned it, I give myself permission to slack off for a while and recover. Since I've exceeded my capacity for responsibility in such a dramatic fashion, I end up needing to take more recovery time than usual. This is when the guilt-spiral starts.

The longer I procrastinate on returning phone calls and emails, the more guilty I feel about it.  The guilt I feel causes me to avoid the issue further, which only leads to more guilt and more procrastination.  It gets to the point where I don't email someone for fear of reminding them that they emailed me and thus giving them a reason to be disappointed in me.

Then the guilt from my ignored responsibilities grows so large that merely carrying it around with me feels like a huge responsibility.  It takes up a sizable portion of my capacity, leaving me almost completely useless for anything other than consuming nachos and surfing the internet like an attention-deficient squirrel on PCP.

At some point in this endlessly spiraling disaster, I am forced to throw all of my energy into trying to be an adult again, just to dig myself out of the pit I've fallen into. The problem is that I enter this round of attempted adulthood already burnt out from the last round. I can't not fail.

It always ends the same way.  Slumped and haggard, I contemplate the seemingly endless tasks ahead of me.

And then I rebel.

House Divided

What do you do when mom is for one team and dad is for another? Share, of course!
This unique canvas is designed to coordinate with the EGM monogram a couple of posts back. Bethany is using antiqued tine sports signs and wanted something to compliment that look and reflect their team spirit.

Lauren and I are headed out to Jackson today. She's had her bags packed since Sunday! I do have several paintings on the to do list started and will be finishing them as soon as I get back. In the meantime, keep Emily in your thoughts. I have many of you who have asked me to pass along well wishes. Consider it done.

Let's Get This Show...

...on the road! Lauren and I have our bags packed for Jackson! We are leaving Thursday to go down and support Emily in the Miss Tennessee pageant. We will miss Wednesday night's preliminaries, but we already had obligations. We will get to see talent on Thursday night, evening gown on Friday night, and the finals and crowning on Saturday night. We are beyond excited! Mike and Carter are staying here and already referring to the house as the "man cave".

If you would like to watch the pageant, here is the link to the official website. You can check out the contestants and find the link for a live feed each night.

The kids have their first swimming lesson ever starting this morning. They are excited, but a little scared. I know Miss Molly will teach them so much! I love all things water and swimming and am so happy that my children enjoy that as well.

Lauren got her library card! We are participating in the summer reading program at Magness Library. Lauren is a determined reader and is doing well with her sight words and spelling. She is going to be ready to roll when kindergarten starts! You had to be six to get a card, but the rules recently changed and now you just have to be five.

I did finish a few paintings this weekend. I am going to try to get a lot at least started before I take off for a few days. This order was placed through Et Cetera by new customer Dina for a couple of roommates. I loved my college roommate, Robin. I would have totally had one of these signs on our apartment door!

Well, I'm ready for this crazy busy week to get started! You all have a great week, too!

Harper Monroe

Here is the inspiration...the fabrics being used in Harper's nursery.

Here is the artwork created as a result. I think it turned out really cute. It's going to be adorable in the nursery, but I can totally see it in a "big girl" room, too.

This one is a 12x24 ($40.00). It is meant to coordinate with the ballerina a couple of posts back. Thank you, Kandice! I hope you and little miss Harper love it!

I'm off to the Miss Tennessee Send-Off Party tonight. I hope you all can come out and support my little sister, Emily, as a contestant. Thank you all who donated an item, time, money, and just positive energy. It is greatly appreciated. We are all a little nervous and a lot excited! I'll keep you posted!

Easton Michael Gregorich

Don't you just love the colors in this bedding? Easton's mother, Bethany, described the look as classic contemporary. I like that.

I had fun matching the colors in the stripes to the bedding. I wanted to keep the classic look with a clean, uncluttered canvas. Bethany chose to do the monogram instead of them name. I like that, too.

Finally, as an added bonus, I did the edges of the canvas in a super light shade of the aqua and did dots in colors coordinating with the stripes. I don't do this very often and now I remember why...it's hard!
Little Easton's nursery is going to just be breathtaking. Thank you, Bethany!

Girly Girl

This is such a girly girl canvas! I love the diamonds in the two shades of green in the background accented by a hot pink dots. The green and pink look so good together. They really make the zebra print stand out.

Harper's monogram is on the shirt.

There are even little hot pink rhinestones on the zebra print ballet shoes! Doesn't get much more girly girl than that! This photo also shows the polka dots on the outside border.
Thank you, Kandice, for this very unique order. I had fun painting it!

16x20 - $45.00

A New Font...

I tried out a new font! I really like it - it's kind of like a grown up version of "curlz".

The cream, lime, and navy were requested colors by new customer Joy Black. Here is another example of the customer coming up with a color combination that I probably would never have used and me smacking myself on the forehead going, "Why didn't I think of that?" They look great together! It's a bit softer than black, white, and lime, which is what I usually use.

Thank you, Joy, for the order and the fresh new outlook. I hope your party today is a success!

Baseball Season

Baseball season is in full swing for us here at the Mansfield house. We've got games tonight and tomorrow morning. If we don't have a game, my boys are still at the ball park because Mike volunteered as a commissioner. Carter cannot stay home if he knows that his dad is there! If we're home, a game is on. They want to plan our summer vacation to see a game or two. You'd think they would eventually get enough. Apparently not.
Nancy Golden ordered this baseball jersey a while back and I am just now getting to it. She has a new nephew! I did jerseys for Tripp's older brothers and she wanted one to match just for him. Thank you, Nancy, for the order and for being to patient!
